For a homeowner, the cost of getting a septic tank replaced can be a huge amount. That is why it is best to find signs of a wonky septic tank earlier in the day to avoid breaking you bank balance over something that could be detected and fixed at ½ the cost.

To make it slightly easier, I will elaborate on how you can figure out if your septic tank is malfunctioning. Here are some in-your-face signs of a septic tank failure.

You have started noticing issues at home

Sewage Backup
If you have had a series of sewage backup lately in your toilet or other drainage pipes, you know that you need to find the source. Sewage back up is disgusting and causes your home to reek of odours and fumes.

Malfunctioning Flush
If your flush has not been doing its work well, you may need to inspect your septic tank.

Decrease in Drain Flow
A slower paced flow of water down the drain when you shower or wash your dishes could be a sign that something is wrong with your septic tank or your drain pipes.

Odors
If you start noticing some unpleasant odors around your house, first check your septic tank.

You may also find issues at your tank

Over flow
If you decide to inspect your septic tank and find that it is over flowing or reaching the point of over flow, you may need to act as soon as possible.

Solids accumulation
A tell tale sign of a failed septic tank is the accumulation of excreta or solids.

Issues with the Leach-Field and the neighbouring environment

Wet patches
You have noticed wet patches in your leach field or noticed that water is accumulating, check your tank immediately.

Contamination traces
If you notice nitrates and bacteria in your well water, it means that you are under risk of a health hazard and your septic tank is not properly functioning. Event the accumulation of algae and other aquatic weeds in surrounding lakes or streams can indicate that your septic system is sending out contaminants and other nutrients into these bodies.

Greenery
Sometimes having lush green grass around even in unfavorable weather conditions indicates a failure with your septic system.
