A leaky sink can cause a lot of problems. If the leak is under the sink, it can flood the cabinet and also damage the materials stored in it. When a faucet is the culprit, it can lead to messing up your kitchen and a lot of water is lost. If the problem is small, it can be solved easily. If done wrong, repairing a sink can turn out to be a headache. There are two types of leaks to be addressed, faucet leak and under the sink leak. We have some do-it-yourself tips for both of them.
Under the sink leaks
These leaks can be because of two reasons, leaky sink strainers and leaky p-trap pipes.
Fixing a leaky strainer
If the p-trap pipe is leaking, it can be because of a loose connection, a blockage in the drainpipes or metal trap corrosion.
Try tightening all the compression nuts. If it still leaks, give it a good cleaning. Try cleaning the drain pipe with an auger if you suspect a blockage. If the nuts on the trap are corroded, it may be a signal for you to replace the trap.
If at any step in the process, you are unsure of what is to be done, contact a professional plumber immediately. The wrong step can cause more damage and a missing part will lead to your kitchen or bathroom flooding immediately.
