When you turn on your air conditioner, all you expect is to experience cooler temperature in your home. But when that cold air is accommodated by foul smell, it can make your experience not so pleasant. When such a case arises, you need to do something to remove that smell, and it's best to act immediately.
There are many different types of smells and causes for each of those smells. Hence, it is important for you to understand what is causing that smell, and what you can do to get rid of it.
Types of smells that can occur and their causes:
Mildew: Oone of the most common odors is a result of mildew or fungus growing in or around the unit. This usually happens over time, as air-conditioning units remove excess moisture. Dust and debris particles may accumulate within the areas with lingering moisture. Even dirty filters may circulate a dirty mold-like smell.
Rotten Eggs: Small animals, injured birds and rodents that take shelter inside the air ducts and eventually get stuck, tend to circulate a rotten egg smell. You may need to have your ducts professionally cleaned to wipe out any remains.
Skunk: It's possible that a dead skunk is causing this smell, but that is not always the case. It is possible that there is a gas leak. Methyl mercaptan, which smells similar to skunk spray, is a dangerous gas that may be circulating in your home. If this is happening, then it's best advised that you leave the home and contact an HVAC professional immediately.
Feet: This is caused due to the collection of stagnant water in the system that hasn't been drained out properly. It is usually due to dirt clogging the unit. A thorough cleaning can help you get rid of this smell.
Sewage: A ruptured sewer vent pipe near the duct system may have allowed methane gas to enter into the ductwork and circulate into your home. Methane gas is dangerous and if you get a sewer like smell, don't delay calling a good HVAC contractor.
Gunpowder and exhaust fumes: Electrically powered air-conditioners have high chances of short-circuits, which may produce a gunpowder-like smell. The air-conditioner engine and other components, which may be containing fluids, can leak. If this occurs, smells similar to those of exhaust fumes may permeate your home. To avoid severe repercussion, get your unit fixed by a professional HVAC contractor.
If you notice any of these smells in your house, after you turn on the air-conditioner, schedule a checkup with an experienced HVAC contractor. Not only to drive away the smell, but also to stay safe from the potential harm that cause health problems to your and your family.
