Home plumbing, what would you do without it, what can’t you do without it? Having a functional home plumbing system is vital if you want to survive and live in that home. External pipes, that are exposes, are the pipes that you need to worry about.
There are four problems that external pipes often get affected by and you need to be prepared to deal with them.
Galvanized metal pipes that are exposed to the environment have a high chance of being corroded. Pipes of iron, copper and aluminium corrode over time. Rust can easily form inside and outside the pipe. Corroded pipes will result in giving your home water a reddish-brownish colour. The corrosion eventually results in leaks, cracks and holes on the pipe.
The best solution is to replace your pipe with a PVC one that won’t easily corrode.
Clogged external pipes will create a big problem in getting rid of waste water and matter from your home. The pipe may have clogged because of hair, grime or dirt. While you may be tempted to throw in a gallon of cleansers to open the clog, don’t. Cleansers are acidic in nature and eats into your pipe, eventually causing a hole. It’s best to take a preventive measure such as covering all the drains in your home with a strainer.
Cracks Caused by Roots
Tree and plant roots intentionally seek out soil that has the most moisture. Your pipe, which runs in the ground, moisturizes it through small leaks and cools the soil. This brings roots towards the pipe and they can even break through the pipe to access the water.
You have to ensure that you don’t place the pipe next to any trees or plants.
This is probably the most common plumbing problem Canadians face. The cold causes the water to freeze in the pipe, which then expands and causes cracks or bursts. The issue is often gone unnoticed until spring hits and the ice melts.
