Basements are susceptible to flooding for a wide array of reasons. These reasons could be a pipe burst, or a heavy rainstorm that fills the basement with several feet of water. Basement flooding brings its own set of peculiar problems that only add to the ordeal.
Be wary when entering a flooded basement, as there is a danger of electrocution. If you are using a pump, make sure that you hook it to an outside electrical source. Allow the water to recede, and only then enter the flooded area. This will allow you to see any potential electrical hazards before entering the basement. If your circuit breaker is easily accessible, then turn off the electricity. This will ensure maximum safety when entering the area. Also, have a qualified technician perform an examination before you turn on any appliances.
Bacteria and Other Contaminants
Water flooding brings with it bacteria and other contaminants. If adequate safety precautions are not exercised, then there is a risk of contamination. It is important to take safety precautions before you enter the water and come in contact with it. Make sure that you wear rubber boots and gloves before getting into the water. Don not let the water come in contact with your skin. If you are exposed to the water, wash your skin with soap and water. Hire professional cleaners with experience in order to clean up water damage.
Mold and Mildew
A flooded basement can be dangerous even after the water has receded. There can be areas which did not dry completely, and as a result, mold and mildew can grow. Microscopic spores are released by molds which can cause serious breathing and health problems. If you find any mold or mildew appearing on any of the hard surfaces, then clean them with a bleach and water. Make sure that the area is completely dry after cleaning or else mold and mildew will grow back. If you get mold on carpeting, furniture and paper products, then you will have to discard them.
Homes equipped with natural gas have to be careful when dealing with basement floods. Gas lines can be damaged by water. In such a scenario get in touch with the gas company and ask them to switch off the gas line completely. This needs to be done until the lines are inspected and it is established that they are safe. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the fire department.
