A clogged toilet is not any less than a nightmare, and dealing with one can be very excruciating, to say the least. Fortunately, there are ways through which you can clear most of the clogs without hiring a certified plumber. Let’s look at the different ways, using which you can clear toilet clogs.
1. Avoid Over Flushing
If your toilet is clogged then flushing is not going to help. Many people have a habit of flushing when dealing with a clogged toilet, however, this does nothing to solve the problem. On the contrary, it aggravates the problem. So, do not flush when dealing with a clogged toilet.
2. Keep the bathroom dry
Keep unused paper and towels on the bathroom floor, so it would soak up any unnecessary splash that occurs when unclogging the toilet.
3. Clear Obstruction
If the obstruction is something that is clearly visible and is causing a clogging, like a child’s toy, then the best thing to do would be to clear it with hands, as any unnecessary involvement of tools could make the problem worse instead of solving it. Use a pair of gloves when unclogging with your hand, as toilets are unsanitary and the gloves will protect you from germs.
4. A high quality Plunger
It is very important to use a heavy duty rubber plunger. Do not buy cheap suction-cup type plunger as they are not apt for the job. Once you have got yourself a plunger, follow the following steps :
- insert the plunger into the hole, make sure the plunger completely covers the hole.
- pump the plunger over the hole, start slowly at first as the plunger will push air into the bowl. Push down and then sharply pull up to disturb the clog. Keep doing this vigorously until you see the water draining.
5. Use a homemade drain cleaner
Pour about one cup of baking soda along with two cups of vinegar in the toilet. Once done with that, pour some really hot water, not boiling water into the toilet. Let the mixture sit overnight and the obstruction would get cleared by the morning. Remember though, this won’t work for clogs caused due to hard obstructions like a toy.
The above points will surely help you get your toilet unclogged. Incase the above points are not able to solve your problem or if the problem persists, then getting in touch with a certified plumber is the right thing to do, cause delay might further intensify the problem.
