Banging pipes even when there is no water flowing can be very annoying. Such noises happen very randomly when the water isn’t running. Generally, this problem occurs either in the morning or in the evening. In order to solve the problem of banging pipes, you will first have to find out the cause. Understanding the cause of the problem will help in solving it easily and efficiently. Some of the common causes of banging pipes could be sediment buildup and water hammer.

Clear Out Sediment Buildup
When the plumbing system of your home starts becoming old, minerals will start building up. This mineral buildup could lead to the banging of the pipes. To get rid of these banging noises, you will have to clear out the sediment buildup. In order to clear the sediment buildup in your pipes, you can do the following:
  • Pour hot water down the drain
  • Pull any visible clogs with the help of a string
  • Put some baking soda in the drain. Let it settle for some time and then rinse it by pouring lot of hot water

Fix Water Hammer
Fixing the water hammer problem totally depends on the age of your home. This is because the houses that have been built before the 1960’s have air chambers. These air chambers are the T-sections of the pipe that hold air and act as shock absorbers. At times, the air in the air chambers get displaced by water and the pipes start to make noise even when there is no water flowing.

If you have air chambers, you will have to drain out all the water in your home’s plumbing and refill it again in order to fix the water hammer problem. See how:
  • Turn off the main water supply to your home
  • Turn on the highest faucet in your home
  • Turn on the lowest faucet and let all the water in the tank drain out. When all the water has been drained, air will start filling in the air chambers.
  • Turn off the lowest faucet and put the main water supply to your home back on
  • Keep the top faucet running till it stops sputtering, and then turn it off

If your home was built after the 1960’s, you will have water hammer arrestors installed. These arrestors are a modern replacement for air chambers. The water hammer arrestors are spring loaded and do not fail. So, if you have water hammer problem, you don’t have water hammer arrestors.

When you are experiencing banging pipes, you should follow the above steps to get rid of the problem. If you are not able to solve the problem on your own, you should consider calling the professional plumbers in Edmonton who will be able to solve this problem quickly and easily.
