In order for us to enjoy the benefits that plumbing provides us with we need to take some precautions, especially during the winter. Here are a few precautions that will get you through the winter.
1. Disconnect outside hoses
Although outside hoses serve good purpose during the summers, leaving them outside when the winters start is not a good idea. It is recommended that you disconnect any and all outside hoses. After disconnecting them, safely store them away. It will also include outside faucets being completely drained and shut off. Whatever water left in a hoses and faucets outside will naturally freeze and expand in cold temperatures. This eventually causes the faucets to freeze or burst. Also, it’s essential that you make sure that any of your outdoor faucets aren’t dripping or leaking. The tiniest of leaks can cause a big damage.
2. Keep your gutters clean
Keeping your gutters clean is important! Make sure that you keep the leaves that fall in the away from your home’s gutters and downspouts. Although they may seem harmless, fallen leaves along with debris in gutters will often lead to some serious drainage issues. For instance, blockage through leaves will cause rain water to overflow and seep into your home’s foundation. Then, in the cold season this water will freeze and expand. In many cases, this will lead to breakages, roof damage, and host of other kind of repairs.
3. Inspect your pipes
Exposed piping is the least of may people’s concerns and this may lead to a host of problems when the winter arrives. Make this your top priority. Many people are under the assumption that piping in crawlspaces, garages, and other enclosed areas are free from harm’s way during the cold season. But, any piping that is exposed can be a major area of concern for potential freezing problems. The probability of these pipes freezing are high and are at the same risk as the ones located outside your home. This makes it important to keep an eye out before temperatures get too cold.
It is always a good idea that you inspect the condition of your pipes beforehand as frozen and burst piping can lead to trouble for your water and plumbing. A good way of ensuring that your pipes wont freeze, is by covering or insulating any exposed piping. This provides a protective barrier against the elements.
